Student Work, Brielle Jenkins






For this piece I used glass jars, one filled with spit, another with my tooth, and another with my hair.  The glass made really interesting shadows on the paper that looked like Chinese characters.  By using parts of myself to cast the shadows I was hoping to create some kind of reflection of myself.  Although this didn’t really come across in the drawing, I felt a strong emotional connection to it.  For some reason I had to pick objects with meaning in order be motivated with the assignment.  My materials included ink and charcoal.  The drips from the ink took up much of the negative space.  The drips also create a very linear quality to the piece.  -Danielle Jenkins, Fall 2013

LOST is about the loss of the physical body; about mortality. The displaced hair is lost, separated from the body, graduated over a large cloth that may reference something like a garment or a curtain, gathered and draped over a chair.

The assignment was to draw on an object. For this assignment I used a cigar box I first bought when I got to St. Augustine. It has been with me all four years of college and has a lot of memories tied to it. To continue along the theme of memories, I created a script to pull the public photos uploaded to my Facebook profile over the last four years. I calculated the average color of each photo, the average red color, the average green color, and the average blue color. I used the output of this script to line the inside of the box. This allows the box to still be usable but adds another layer of memories it can hold. -Spencer Finnell, Fall 2013

IN COLOMBIA, THE ISSUE OF ACCESS TO EDUCATION IS NOT ONLY DIRECTLY LINKED TO THE ARMED CONFLICT BUT ALSO TO THE GOVERNMENT’S INCOMPETENCE AND INABILITY TO CORRECTLY ADDRESS CRUCIAL SOCIAL ISSUES. UNFORTUNATELY, THE RIGHT FOR AN EDUCATION CONTINUES TO BE VIOLATED AND THE SYSTEM, WHICH CREATES THE PARAMETERS TO MAKE IT POSSIBLE, ACTUALLY FAILS TO GUARANTEE SUCH RIGHT. THIS SAD REALITY REFLECTS THE ABANDONMENT IN WHICH MANY CHILDREN COLOMBIA LIVE IN, WHO ARE DEPRIVED FROM ATTENDING SCHOOLS DUE TO THE RECRUITMENT BY ILLEGAL ARMED GROUPS, INEFFICIENT MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES BY THE GOVERNMENT, AND THE NEVER-ENDING POVERTY LEVELS IN WHICH THESE CHILDREN GROW UP. -Catalina Arboleda, Fall 2013



Final Project: Continue an idea from a previous Assignment
Catalina Chose to further develop her idea that came out of 
the drawing on objects assignment.  
She added more objects and  installed the piece in the library.
