Klaus Burgel, Artist

Although the objects are not "found", but rather made by the artist, the idea of a drawing with an object can offer inspiration for the found object assignment.  Check out more work on the artist's website.  Link here.

My Rock Is A Purse

Issue 33 Deception Spring 2009

Inventory / My Rock Is a Purse

Susan Greenspan

“Inventory” is a column that examines or presents a list, catalogue, or register.

In 1996, my friend V—— gave me a rock that looked like a tiny purse, one with a thin metal clasp at the top, the sort you might carry when you dress up to go out at night. V—— had found the rock in the mid-1970s during a vacation to Pantelleria, the volcanic island between Sicily and Tunisia. At the time she gave it to me, I was building a collection of things that looked like other things—a potato chip that looked like a heart, a piece of white bread that looked like a T-shirt. We put the rock that looked like a purse on a piece of crimson velvet and took pictures of it.
Since the rock-purse gift, I have been searching for more rocks that resemble other things. I found the majority of my current collection (about twenty in number) at the beach. Most of the “meats” (bacon, pancetta, tripe) were found in and around Santa Cruz, California. The bean and the macadamia nut are from Fetiye, Turkey. The egg and the black-and-white cookie are from Cape Cod.

Dan Walker: Unstuck in Paris

"...organizing a disparate collection of the ephemera from his life, and adding texts in an effort to give these small compositions a direction (even if it’s a comical dead end), and even though he has avoided direct narrative. Unstuck, a fairly massive exhibition of his collage works over the past year and a half, opened last week in Paris at Galerie d’Architecture in the central Marais area of Paris."

Article and interview by Matthew Rose. I found on The Art Blog. Link here.

Linnea Vegh and Steven Streisguth

Working and thinking about found objects.

"“Small Objects”, on view at VWVOFFKA is the collaborative body of sculpture, print and found objects by Linnea Vegh and Steven Streisguth. The show embodies the concept of collaboration on many levels. Point and counterpoint can be found formally, conceptually, and in the process of making. The collaborative spirit can also be seen in the way these artists specifically wanted Vwvoffka’s space for it’s inviting, homey appearance (it originally was meant to be a living room). They even brought in living room chairs, a rug, and a lamp to make a comfortable place for visitors to view and discuss the work. Visitors are allowed to touch the work because the artists themselves always want to touch the art they view in exhibitions, Vegh said." Found on The Art Blog. Link here.
