Christian Boltanski, Artist

French sculptor, photographer, painter and film maker. Self-taught, he began painting in 1958 but first came to public attention in the late 1960s with short avant-garde films and with the publication of notebooks in which he came to terms with his childhood. The combination in these works of real and fictional evidence of his and other people’s existence remained central to his later art. As well as presenting assemblages of documentary photographs wrenched from their original context, in the 1970s he also experimented inventively with the production of objects made of clay and from unusual materials such as sugar and gauze dressings. These works, some of them entitled Attempt at Reconstitution of Objects that Belonged to Christian Boltanski between 1948 and 1954 (1970–71; see 1990 exh. cat., p. 11), again included flashbacks to segments of time and life that blurred memory with invention. -source is MOMA

"In the past three decades Boltanski has become an exponent of the "culture of memory" with his spacious installations and the very atmospheric settings of his works. The artist’s images make a complex impact. His intention is not to erect permanent monuments, but to activate memory, i.e., to promote a culture of memory that constantly underscores the living in the face of what has been lost. The Les archives du coeur project in which the artist is in the process of installing an archive of humanity’s heartbeats on the island of Ejima in southern Japan, is also to be seen in this context."

Donald Urquhart, Artist

An Enlightened Stand is a site-specific work (ie made for that exact place), appearing amongst the trees like a painting of the shadows cast in the striking sunlight.  The lighter, square shape on the ground is similar to the canvas support of a painting.  It is as if Urquhart has captured a moment in time almost like a photograph.  There is also a seemingly simple underlying geometry suggested in the work.

Donald Urquhart’s work is usually conceptual, meaning that the ideas behind the work are more important than the materials. In this case the shadows run south of each tree, as if the sun was in the north – the opposite of reality.  Urquhart is interested in fusing political ideas with a passion for the environment and the use of natural materials that grow and change with the seasons. 

In this case, natural light, the strong colour of the trees and the marble-white layer that Urquhart introduces all intermingle. The sensation varies depending on the time of day and the weather conditions.

Donald Urquhart’s artistic practice involves working with the environmental space to create permanent outdoor installations using natural materials to define colours, shapes and forms. 

 The artist has ‘painted’ an effective visual image of trees casting long shadows. To create the square on the ground he removed 42 tons of earth and replaced it with 30 tons of white Dolomite marble chips.
